Urbana-Champaign Community Information
*Okay, so is it "Champaign-Urbana" or "Urbana-Champaign"?
Champaign and Urbana are two separate cities (with separate city governments, police departments, fire departments, libraries, park districts, and other city services) that gradually grew together, with the University in the middle. The dividing line is Wright Street, with Champaign to the west and Urbana to the east. Because Champaign is about twice the size of Urbana, the locals (who are predominantly Champaign-ites) usually refer to the area as "Champaign-Urbana" ("CU"). However, because the main University administrative buildings are located in Urbana, the official name of the University is the "University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign." Whatever you call it, though, CU provides a rich and varied intellectual, cultural, and recreational environment in a safe community that maintains Midwestern traditions of friendliness and unpretentiousness.
