Orientation for New Teaching Assistants

Congratulations on your appointment as a teaching assistant (TA) in our department! In order to prepare you for your teaching responsibilities, we have arranged for you to attend the Required Teaching Assistants' Orientation(s).

The Orientation is for all new TAs who have first-time classroom-teaching or grading responsibilities at Illinois . The program is sponsored by our department and the Center for Teaching Excellence. Sessions will focus on topics basic to effective and rewarding instruction, e.g. different learning styles, active learning techniques, and other practices of good teaching. The orientation also includes small group sessions, which address discipline-specific instructional issues.

DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WHO HAVE PASSED THE SPEAK TEST AND WILL HAVE CLASSROOM TA DUTIES:

Attendance at this two day program is required as part of your contractual responsibilities with our department:

Teaching Orientation called The Graduate Academy For College Teaching will be August 17 and 18 (Monday & Tuesday) from 8:30am - 3:30pm at Foellinger Auditorium located at the South end of the University of Illinois Quad at 709 S. Mathews Avenue.

There will also be some required microteaching sessions held on August 19 or August 20 or August 21. You will be able to sign up later on for whichever of these dates you prefer.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT PASSED THE SPEAK TEST AND WILL HAVE NON CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS SUCH AS GRADING:

Attendance at this one day program is required as part of your contractual responsibilities with our department.

Graduate Symposium on Grading & Office Hours will be August 19 (Wednesday) from 8:15am-3:15pm in Room 141 of Wohlers Hall located at 1206 S. Sixth Street on the University Campus.
