Meeting with an advisor is mandatory in physics for students who have not completed PHYS 325.
If you fail to meet with an advisor, you will not be able to register.

Making an appointment

  • You will receive an email letting you know when you can sign up for an appointment.
  • Make an appointment by going to the Advising Appointment System at https://my.physics.illinois.edu/advising/.
  • Perform the following steps:
    1. Make a note of who your advisor is.
    2. Select an appointment date/time on the appointment calendar. Make a note of the time and date of the advising appointment.
      Do not miss this appointment!
    3. Make a note of which program you are in (Engineering Physics, LAS Specialized Physics, LAS Science and Letters Physics).

    4. Print out a copy of the advising planner that is linked from the appointment page.
    5. For students who wish to transfer out of physics: print out a copy of the "transfer advising planner".

Before the Meeting:

  • Fill out the advising planner. Bring this with you to the meeting! This includes:
    • Checking off courses that you have taken.
    • Filling in all information about general education courses that you have taken.
    • Write a proposed schedule for Spring 2010 and Fall 2010.
      If you plan to take courses during Summer 2010, please include that as well.
    • Follow the link below for information about physics programs, course offering and restrictions and general education requirements.

  • Print a Degree Audit Report (DARS) and bring this with you to the meeting! Run the report by doing the following
    • Go to http://www.registrar.illinois.edu/dars/.
    • Expand all sections before printing.
    • Print a copy of this report.
    • Highlight the remaining Gen Ed requirements before coming to your advising appointment.
    • Check your report for accuracy. Bring up any discrepancies at your advising meeting.
  • Make a list of questions that you have for the advisor. You can write these questions on the back of the advising planner.

During the Meeting:

  • Arrive 15 minutes early in 231 Loomis for your appointment. Do not arrive late or miss your appointment.
  • Bring a completed printed version of your Advising Meeting Planner (see above).
  • Bring a printed copy of your Degree Audit (DARS) (see above).
  • If you arrive to your appointment without these two important pieces of information, you will not be allowed to see your advisor at the scheduled time. You will need to reschedule for a later time.

End of the Meeting:

  • Return Advising Agreement with your advisor's signature to 231 Loomis to Kate Shunk for the removal of your registration hold.
    Kate will give you a copy of your planner and keep a copy for our records.
  • Find your registration time ("time ticket") at https://apps.uillinois.edu.
  • Register as soon as possible for the best course selection.
