Abstract:

Popular lecture. In this brief presentation I will showcase some really cool education & outreach efforts created by the Department of Physics at the University of Illinois. The Physics Van shows the fun of science to elementary school kids. The WhysGuy is a weekly science segment at a local TV station. Physics 123 is a hands-on physics course for elementary education students. smartPhysics is a tool used to flip intro physics classes all over North America, and IOLab is a gadget that could change the way we approach hands-on activities in these courses, as well as fostering communities of citizen scientists. All of these seemingly different projects are actually all very similar; they have, as their focus, the engagement of people with each other and with science, and they have all evolved in ways that we could never have anticipated.
