Transfer Out Of Physics

The following instructions are for students in the physics department who would like to transfer into another department. If you are a student in another department who would like to transfer into Engineering or LAS Physics, please visit the Transfer Into Physics section.

For students currently enrolled in a physics curriculum, until you are accepted for transfer into another department, you are subject to the rules and regulations of the department of physics. This includes undergraduate advising. If you are interested in transferring out of physics, you are requested to fill out an advising transfer planner form and bring it to your advising meeting. Note: to complete this form, you must meet with and obtain the relevant signatures. (see below)

The advising transfer planner form is not an application to transfer. It is an assessment of the possibility that you might be able to transfer. This is to help you determine when a transfer might take place, as well as a suggested set of courses which might be used to assess or help prepare you for the transfer.

Changing colleges

Freshmen (including students entering with sophomore standing) must remain in the college to which they were admitted for one year. Students who have transferred from another institution must remain in the college to which they were admitted for one semester.

  1. Review the various guidelines and policies for LAS or Engineering, along with specific requirements for particular departments.
  2. Print out a transfer advising agreement and obtain the signature of a dean at the college to which you hope to transfer.
  3. Have the dean record the required GPA on the advising agreement.
  4. Find out under what circumstances you may transfer (required courses, number of total hours accumulated, etc.).
  5. Ask when you can transfer (i.e. before fall classes begin).
  6. Make an appointment with an adviser in the department into which you hope to transfer to discuss your schedule.

Changing Departments/Curricula Within Current College

  • Review the various guidelines and policies for LAS or Engineering, along with specific requirements for particular departments.

Note: If you have already been successfully admitted to your new program, you do not need to see an advisor in physics. To prevent our placing a hold on your registration, send an email to Kate Shunk (shunk@illinois.edu) with your UIN and the name of your new major.
