2017 Illinois Physics NSF Grad Fellowship Precompetition Announcement

We're pleased to announce the 2017 Illinois Physics NSF Graduate Fellowship Pre-Competition for students interested in submitting NSF grad fellowship applications by the Physics and Astronomy October 27, 2017 deadline.

Overview: To participate in the NSF fellowship pre-competition, you must be eligible for the 2018 NSF Graduate Fellowship program and you must submit complete pre-competition applications for the NSF grad fellowship program to Lance Cooper (via e-mail: slcooper@illinois.edu) by the precompetition deadline, Oct. 9, 2017 at 5 p.m.

Application Requirements: A complete "pre-competition application" includes the following two (2) components of the NSF graduate fellowship application: (i) the Personal Statement, Relevant Background, and Future Goals essay (3 pages); and (ii) the Graduate Research Statement essay (2 pages). The reviewers will evaluate the pre-competition application and will select several applications for awards. The reviewers will also provide detailed feedback to ALL applicants so that they can improve their NSF applications prior to the Physics and Astronomy October 27, 2017 deadline.

Awards and Feedback: Up to four cash awards ~$200 each will be made for the top graduate student applications and up to three cash awards ~$100 each will be made for the top undergraduate student applications. All submitted applications will be given detailed evaluations by the reviewers to help improve the NSF fellowship submissions of all applicants.

Deadlines:
Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, at 5 p.m.: NSF Grad Fellowship pre-competition applications are due
Monday, Oct. 16, 2017: Competition awards announced and feedback on applications provided to students
Friday, Oct. 27, 2017: Deadline for submitting full fellowship applications to NSF

Reviewers: Fellowship applications will be reviewed, and feedback will be provided, by Lance Cooper and Celia Elliott
