Lance Cooper

Are you planning to take or thinking about taking your preliminary or final examination this academic year (Sept. 2018 - Aug. 2019)? If so, then you may be interested in attending the 2018 Physics Prelim/Final Exam Workshop from 6 - 8 p.m. on Sept. 4, 2018 in Rm. 144 Loomis. Pizza and drinks will be provided!

During the first hour of the workshop (6-7 p.m.), I plan to cover the following topics:

-- General information about the prelim and thesis examinations

-- Rules associated with the prelim and thesis exams

-- Rules associated with resigning your appointment

-- Steps for organizing a prelim/final exam committee

During the second hour (7-8 p.m.), I plan to discuss:

-- Tips for writing the prelim paper

-- Tips for writing your thesis

-- Tips for writing a ~30 minute prelim/final talk

-- Any other questions about the prelim or thesis exams you have

If you're interested in attending this Workshop, please let me know (slcooper@illinois.edu) so I can estimate how much pizza to order. Also, tell me if you're planning to take (i) your prelim or (ii) your final examination this year, so I know how much time to spend on each topic.

Prelim/Thesis Writing Groups:  Finally, if you're interested in participating in a Physics Prelim Paper or Thesis Writing Group, please let me know! The grad office will help organize, provide basic instruction, and offer some financial support for students interested in participating in a Prelim Paper Writing Group or Thesis Writing Group for physics students during Fall 2018 and/or Spring 2019.  We'll also have Prelim and Thesis Writing Group signup sheets at the Prelim/Final Exam Workshop.

Thanks, and if you have any questions about this Workshop, please let me know.
