Communications Internships

Seeking writers, photo-/videographers, social media specialists for the Spring 2019 and Summer 2019 terms

Illinois Physics is among the foremost departments of physics in the US. We are world renowned for our “Urbana style” of research, defined by a collegial spirit and open collaboration between experimentalists and theorists across our seven research specializations. Our trifold mission—research, education, and outreach—is achieved with remarkable creativity, energy, and care, providing ample communications subjects.

Illinois Physics is offering the following paid communications internships:

Staff writers to research and write features, profiles, award announcements, and alumni news articles for our print and digital publications and website

Photographers to increase our photo archive in line with our visual identity and to provide images for news stories and other outreach efforts

Videographers to tell our story through video journalism

Social-media specialists to pre-schedule posts to our social media accounts, promoting engagement with students and alumni

Interns may serve simultaneously in more than one of the listed positions. Pay rate is commensurate with experience. Starting date is flexible. This position is ideal for aspiring science communicators. It is open to University of Illinois sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students. Hours per week are flexible.

Job Requirements

• ability to work independently and meet deadlines

• strong interest in science is helpful, but not required

• availability 4 to 8 hours per week

Additional requirements for staff writers

• strong writing skills; ability to deliver a story in a compelling way

• personable, able to conduct interviews in person, by email, or on the phone

• accuracy and diligence with fact-checking

• excellent grammar and punctuation

Additional requirements for photographers and videographers

• strong photography or videography skills (personal equipment a plus but not required)

• proficiency with photo or video editing

The length of this internship will be determined by candidate availability and success in this role, with the potential to continue into future academic terms.
