As a minimal model of quantum chaotic dynamics, we systematically study the entanglement growth in a random unitary circuit by replica trick.  The problem maps to the statistical mechanics of interacting random walks. We find that the growth rate is the line tension corrected by the entropy of the random walks, and the fluctuation obeys the universal Kadar-Parisi-Zhang scaling of a polymer in a random media. This picture allows us to understand the deterministic linear growth of various R\'enyi entropies as well as the universal physics of the fluctuations in chaotic quantum systems.
