The Nobel Prize-winning discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2012 completed the Standard Model of particle physics, a quantum field theory that describes our current best understanding of the fundamental particles and forces. Despite its staggering predictive power, the Standard Model leaves open crucial questions and cannot be the final theory of nature. Supersymmetry is an extension to the Standard Model that could resolve theoretical shortcomings while explaining the origin of dark matter. This colloquium will review the search for Beyond-the-Standard Model physics at the LHC, focusing on Supersymmetric models with the potential to explain dark matter. Results of searches in events with two electrons or muons, which offer a potential “smoking gun” for Beyond-the-Standard Model physics, will be presented. Avenues for exploiting the large datasets to be collected during the High-Luminosity LHC running period will be discussed, including harnessing recent advances in machine learning techniques and fast electronics that allow for triggering on charged particle tracks.
