The detection of gravitational waves will be one of the most celebrated scientific achievements of this century. Realizing this breakthrough required the development of major experimental and cyber-infratructure resources. I will discuss how community efforts from disparate fields of research were essential to enable the birth of gravitational wave astrophysics, and how they are now being used to maximize the science that can be extracted by combining gravitational waves with other cosmic messengers.
