Abstract: The increase in renewable electricity that California has experienced, most strongly since 2014, has had repercussions throughout California's electricity and natural-gas sectors. My talk will focus on the challenges of integrating renewable electricity onto the grid, such as intermittency, uncertainty, and ramping. I will discuss three projects I have worked on to facilitate renewables integration: day-ahead forecasting of natural gas needed by gas-fired power plants, calculating customers' costs of accepting bids to build electricity storage, and modeling future prices for electrical capacity.
Bio: Carrie Meldgin received her PhD in atomic physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2016. In May 2016 she joined Pacific Gas and Electric Company as a Senior Quantitative Analyst in the Energy Procurement Quantitative Analysis group. She is enjoying stretching her analytical skills in new directions, including processing and analyzing big datasets, learning economics, statistics, and corporate finance, and building models that aid in reducing California’s carbon emissions.
