Each year, Illinois Physics recognizes student excellence at a special awards banquet. In 2019, the Fortieth Physics-on-the-Campus Luncheon was held at the Illini Union on Wednesday, April 24. Many of the awards are made possible through the generous support of our alumni.


  • This fund supports an award for teaching excellence for faculty or lecturers in the Department of Physics and was endowed by family in memory of Arnold T. Nordsieck, a distinguished theoretical physicist and member of the faculty from 1947 to 1961.

  • The Davis Award, which was endowed by Doug and Judy Davis, recognizes members of our faculty and academic staff for their excellent teaching in undergraduate physics.

  • The net income from the fund shall be used to provide monetary awards to young faculty in the Department of Physics. Two types of awards may be made: "W. Dale and Jeanne C. Compton Scholar in Physics" for associate professors. The award will consist of a one-time $20k payment to be used at the Scholar's discretion to enhance his or her research productivity. The money may not be used to supplement the faculty member's salary. The award is not renewable. "W. Dale and Jeanne C. Compton Fellow in Physics" for assistant professors who have completed their third-year review. The award will consist of a one-time payment of $10k to be used at the Fellow's discretion to enhance his or her research productivity. The money may not be used to supplement the faculty member's salary. The award is not renewable.
