The Fall 2012 Physics Careers seminar series opens on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012 with alumnus Matt Pasienski (PhD '11):

Time: 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 6, 2012 (refreshments served at 10:30 a.m.)

Location: 204 Loomis Laboratory (Interaction Room)

Title: PhDs in the Silicon Valley

Speaker: Dr. Matt Pasienski, Ooyala Technologies

Abstract: The San Francisco Bay area is experiencing another boom right now. One of the defining features of this current surge is "Big Data". Companies like Facebook, Google, Twitter, Salesforce, and LinkedIn urgently need experts to analyze mountains of data and turn it into valuable insights and products. I will talk about moving to Mountain View after finishing my PhD in Physics at Illinois and joining a fast-growing startup. I'll tell you who is hiring, how to fine-tune your resume, what these jobs pay, and what else to expect if you decide to move to an internet technology company. This talk should be interesting for anyone considering the Silicon Valley; a PhD in physics is not necessary.

Bio: I graduated from Brian DeMarco's atomic physics group at Illinois in 2011. After moving to the Silicon Valley with other Illinois alumni, I started working at an online video company Ooyala. My current role is a product manager focusing on Big Data.

Note: While he's in Urbana, Matt is interested in meeting with any students interested in discussing job opportunities in Silicon Valley, particularly jobs related to the analysis of "Big Data". If you would like to meet with him on Thursday, Sept. 6 or Friday, Sept. 7, please send me an e-mail, slcooper@illinois.edu, so I can arrange a meeting.
