The Fall 2014 Physics Careers seminar series continues on Friday, Oct. 24, 2014 with alumnus Dustin Wooten:

Time: 11 a.m. on Friday, October 24, 2014 (refreshments served at 10:30 a.m.)

Location: 204 Loomis Laboratory (Interaction Room)

Title:  An Introduction to a Career in Medical Physics

Speaker: Dr. Dustin Wooten, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School

Abstract:   What is medical physics? In short, medical physics is the application of physics to medicine. I will give an introduction to the field and what medical physicists do in research and in the clinic. I will discuss where medical physicists work and the background that is needed for a career in medical physics. Finally, I will share my experience in medical physics and give an overview of my research in medical imaging with positron emission tomography (PET).

Bio: Dustin graduated with a physics degree from Illinois in 2008. Thereafter, Dustin earned his PhD in Medical Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the supervision of Associate Professor Brad Christian. There he developed PET techniques to image the serotonin system. Upon graduation he accepted a postdoctoral research position at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. His current research involves investigating receptor function with simultaneous PET/fMRI.

Note: While he's in Urbana, Dustin is interested in meeting with any students interested in discussing job opportunities in medical physics. If you would like to meet with him, please send me an e-mail, slcooper@illinois.edu, so I can try to arrange a meeting.
