Title:  Insight Data Science: bridging the gap between academia and industry

Speaker:  Josiah Walton, Dept. of Physics, University of Illinois

Abstract: Described as the "sexiest job of the 21st century" by the Harvard Business Review, data science is a massively growing and nascent field filled with career opportunities for individuals with the technical skills and critical thinking abilities to extract meaningful insight from complex data sets. The Insight Data Science program was created specifically to take people with PhDs in STEM fields and rapidly bring them up to speed with the skills and knowledge to successfully transistion into data science from academia. In this seminar, I'll give a brief overview of the field of data science, talk about the Insight program, give some tips on how to prepare for a data science career, and discuss what it's like to participate in an industry internship while completing a PhD.

Bio: Josiah Walton is currently in his final year of graduate school in the UIUC physics department. He is a National Science Foundation graduate research fellow working with Dr. Liang Yang on the EXO-200 experiment, searching for neutrinoless double beta decay. He was recently accepted into and completed the New York City session of the Insight Data Science program, and is currently interviewing with a number of companies for data scientist positions.
