Alumnus Brent Chatham Gives Next Physics Careers Seminar on March 4

The Spring 2016 Physics Careers seminar series continues on Friday, March 4, 2016 with alumnus Brent Chatham:

Title:  Patent Law in the Research and Development Process

Speaker: Brent Chatham, Leydig, Voit, & Mayer, LTD.

Abstract:   Brent Chatham, B.S. Engineering Physics '07, will discuss the role of a patent attorney in the R&D process. Mr. Chatham will provide an overview of acquiring and enforcing patent rights, navigating patent-related risks in bringing new products to market, and defending against assertions of patent infringement. Mr. Chatham will also talk about how his physics degree prepared him for a career in patent law and why a physics degree is one of the most marketable degrees for a patent attorney to have.

Bio: Brent Chatham is a U.S. Patent Attorney at Leydig, Voit & Mayer in Frankfurt, Germany. Mr. Chatham has written and prosecuted patents for electrical, mechanical, and biomedical technologies including computer software, telecommunications systems, microelectronic and photonic systems, semiconductor fabrication techniques, particle accelerators, prosthetic devices, and industrial fabrication equipment. Mr. Chatham has also been involved in proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, the International Trade Commission, and the U.S. District Courts. Prior to attending law school, he received a degree in Engineering Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he worked in a biophysics laboratory that utilized optical trapping techniques to study single-molecule biological systems.
