The Fall 2016 Physics Careers seminar series continues on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2016 with alumna Dr. Mary Upton of Argonne National Laboratory:

Time: 11 a.m. on Friday, September 23, 2016 (refreshments served at 10:30 a.m.)

Location: 204 Loomis Laboratory (Interaction Room)

Title: DOE Synchrotron: Between Industry and Academia

Speaker: Dr. Mary Upton, Argonne National Laboratory

Abstract: There are many ways to be involved in research besides being a professor. Mary works as a staff scientist at a synchrotron at Argonne National Laboratory. She will discuss what goes on day-to-day at the synchrotron, the ups and downs there, and the paths to a National Laboratory job. Questions will be welcomed and encouraged.

Bio: Mary Upton earned a PhD in condensed matter physics from UIUC under the auspices of TC Chiang. While a student at UIUC she performed photoemission measurements on thin films at the (now defunct) Synchrotron Radiation Center in Stoughton, WI. She subsequently was a post-doc at Brookhaven National Lab doing resonant inelastic measurements at intercalated graphite compounds at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). This lead to the opportunity to work as a beamline scientist at APS.

Note: While she's in Urbana, Mary may be available to discuss career opportunities at Argonne National Laboratory. If you would like to meet with her on Friday, Sept. 23, please send me an e-mail, slcooper@illinois.edu, and I'll try to arrange a meeting.
