The Fall 2018 Physics Careers Seminar series begins next week with three recruiting visits by alumni from Sandia National Laboratory (Sept. 10), Civis Analytics (Sept. 11), and Akuna Capital (Sept. 13):

First, on Monday, September 10, alumnus Dr. Clark Snow from Sandia National Laboratory will visit to meet with PhD and MS Physics students interested in possible positions at Sandia National Laboratory.  If you're interested in meeting with Dr. Snow, please contact Lance Cooper with your availability for a meeting on Sept. 10 and I'll try to schedule a meeting.

Next, on Tuesday, September 11, alumnus Dr. Henry Hinnefeld of Civis Analytics will give the first Physics Careers seminar of the Fall 2018 term with a talk about "Data Science Jobs: What They're Like and How to Get One" at 11 a.m. in 204 Loomis. Details of Dr. Hinnefeld's seminar are given below.  If you're interested in meeting with Dr. Hinnefeld while he's here next Tuesday, please contact Lance Cooper and I'll try to arrange a meeting.

Time: 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 (refreshments served at 10:30 a.m.)

Location: 204 Loomis Laboratory (Interaction Room)

Title: Data Science Jobs: What They're Like and How to Get One

Speaker: Dr. Henry Hinnefeld, Civis Analytics

Abstract: This talk will be a high level overview of the data science job landscape. I'll start with a rough taxonomy of different types of data science jobs and describe what the work is like in each. Next I'll offer some suggestions on how to get one of these jobs, and finally I'll conclude with some thoughts on making the transition from academia (and physics) to industry based on my own experiences.

Bio: Henry Hinnefeld is a Senior Data Scientist in the R&D Department at Civis Analytics where he helps develop the methods, tools, and best practices that drive Civis' data science platform. Prior to Civis, Henry was a Fellow at the University of Chicago's Data Science for Social Good program, a condensed matter physicist, and a bluegrass fiddler.

Finally, on Thursday, September 13, alumnus Dr. Xiongjie Yu of Akuna Capital will give the second Physics Careers seminar of the Fall 2018 term with a talk about "Quantitative and Developmental Roles in Finance: Using a Physics Degree at FinTech Companies" at 11 a.m. in 204 Loomis. Details of Dr. Yu's seminar are given below.  If you're interested in meeting with Dr. Yu while he's here next Thursday, please contact Lance Cooper and I'll try to arrange a meeting.

Time: 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 13, 2018 (refreshments served at 10:30 a.m.)
