Title:  Lessons Learned: Platitudes from a former physicist and professional data scientist

Speaker: John Morgan, Senior Director, Data Science, Capital One

Abstract:   Data Science as a career field has exploded in demand and importance for multiple fields, spanning wide business domains and academic disciplines. I’ll share my thoughts and advice for navigating this career field as a physicist, including helpful behaviors and skills for you the individual, realities of corporate culture and decision-making, and some thoughts on disentangling fad and fiction from the real value data science can provide. I’ll also provide some insight into what data science means in the financial services industry, including areas of key importance and research at Capital One.

Bio: John Morgan is a Sr. Director at Capital One and manages a team of 40+ data scientists and business analysts. He has worked as a data scientist in the financial services industry for ten years with a focus on predictive modeling for credit and insurance underwriting, as well as competitive intelligence, capital adequacy, and development of proprietary solvers. Prior to becoming a data scientist, John worked in computational astrophysics at the ASC Flash center at the University of Chicago, where he’s ABD (a euphemism for “post-master’s degree graduate school dropout”) in Astronomy and Astrophysics. He holds a B.Sc. in physics from UIUC.

Note: While he's in Urbana, John may be available to discuss careers in data science and at Capital One. If you would like to meet with him on Friday, April 21, please send me an e-mail, slcooper@illinois.edu, and I'll try to arrange a meeting.
