Alumnus Dr. Dom Ricci Gives Final Spring 2013 Physics Careers Seminar on Thursday, April 18
The final talk in the Spring 2013 Physics Careers seminar series will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2013 with alumnus Dr. Dom Ricci.
Time: 10:00 a.m. (note earlier-than-usual time) on Thursday, April 18, 2013 (refreshments served starting at 9:30 a.m.)
Location: 204 Loomis Laboratory (Interaction Room)
Title: Physics and Finance: Risk, Reward, and Reality
Speaker: Dr. Dom Ricci, Market Risk Manager, HSBC
Abstract: While it's debatable whether the recent economic crisis was caused in part by "quants running amok", there is no argument that many participants in the ongoing resuscitation and fortification of the global financial system require a quantitative background. Physicists have permeated many strata of the financial world, however, the delineation among their various roles is often poorly understood. Dispensing with the omnipresent and depreciative "quant" label, we will survey the types of positions often held by physicists in the banking and traded markets sectors with a focus on the field of financial risk management drawn from the speaker's professional experiences. A review of the critical skills gained through physics education and training will be complemented by recommendations for soft skills and additional self-education.
Bio: Dr. Ricci earned his PhD degree from the University of Illinois in 2006, working in the research group of Prof. T.C. Chiang.
