9/26/2013
The Fall 2013 Physics Careers seminar series continues on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013 with alumnus Neal Groothuis (BS '02):
Time: 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 (refreshments served at 10:30 a.m.)
Location: 204 Loomis Laboratory (Interaction Room)
Title: Physics Is A Great Hedge, Or, How I Stumbled Into the World of Finance
Speaker: Neal Groothuis, Quantitative Developer
Bio: After five enjoyable years in Champaign-Urbana, Neal graduated from UIUC in 2002 with B.S. degrees in Engineering Physics and Computer Science.
He worked in the Chicago area for five years doing software development and systems administration before entering the Financial Mathematics graduate program at the University of Chicago.
After graduating from the program in the spring of 2008, he moved to New York City and joined the investment bank Credit Suisse through its "IT Quant" program.
After spending two and half years working on equity derivative portfolio analysis tools at Credit Suisse, he was hired by Alphabet Funds (now Saiers Capital), a hedge fund, as a developer, where he was responsible for creation and maintenance of a variety of tools.
Neal left Saiers in August of this year and is taking some time off to work on personal projects (and get a bit of swing dancing in!) before returning to the world of financial software development.
