Title:  What It Means To Excel In Industry and How To Do It

Speaker: Dr. Trevis Crane (PhD '05), Northrop Grumman Corporation

Abstract:  Getting a PhD is a difficult process at best and to learn that it doesn't entirely prepare you to excel in a non-traditional role can be challenging. Not only are there gaps that the educational process doesn't fill, sometimes you don't even know what those gaps are. A smart person will learn from their mistakes and fill those gaps as they are encountered, but a wise person will learn from my mistakes. In this talk I will present some of the key takeaways I've gleaned from my time in industry and discuss how to use your advanced degree to best advantage.

Bio: Trevis Crane is a Sr. Program Manager at Northrop Grumman Corp. in Rolling Meadows, IL, focusing on development contracts. He has significant experience with systems engineering and project management in general, commonly working with a diverse cross-functional group to achieve the business area goals. Trevis joined NGC in 2007, starting as a systems engineer, a great introduction to DoD-based engineering and product development. Prior to joining NGC, Trevis worked in Prof. Raffi Budakian's lab as a postdoc and with Prof. Dale Van Harlingen while still a graduate student. Trevis' thesis was in the area of 1/f noise in Josephson junctions at low temperatures.
