Title: Some Helpful Tips for the Postdoc Application Process
Speakers: Dr. Matt Lapa, postdoctoral fellow, University of Chicago
Abstract: The postdoc application process can be stressful and confusing. In this talk I will try to impart all of the tips and helpful advice for navigating this process that I (i) learned from others, and (ii) picked up on my own during the process. I will cover several different topics including where (and when during the year) to find postdoc job postings, the different components of the postdoc application (including research statement, CV, letters of recommendation, etc.), and some ideas for how to make contact with professors you might one day want to work for (for example if you are going to a conference that they will also be attending.
Bio: Matt Lapa is a postdoctoral fellow at the Kadanoff Center for Theoretical Physics at the University of Chicago. He earned his PhD in physics from UIUC in May 2018, and from August 2012 - May 2018 he was a graduate student in the physics department at UIUC studying condensed matter theory in the research group of Professor Taylor Hughes.
