How Data Analytics Put Liverpool on the Cusp of Glory

Interesting New York Times article -- forwarded by Nigel Goldenfeld -- on how data analytics is being used in soccer, specifically at Liverpool.  If you're interested in how data analytics are being used in other sports, you might also check out Moneyball, by Michael Lewis, which describes how the 2002 Oakland Athletics baseball team were able to compete with much larger baseball franchises using data analytics.  You might also check out a subsequent book by Michael Lewis, the Undoing Project, which describes the pioneering work of psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky on why humans often make poor decisions, motivating the need for analytical methods.
