The Physics Department at The College of Wooster invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor, beginning in August 2022. We are looking for a colleague with a strong commitment to undergraduate education, including the ability to meaningfully involve our diverse undergraduate students in a research program. The successful candidate will teach courses and labs at all levels and mentor students in research projects at various levels of difficulty. Candidates should demonstrate engaging and inclusive teaching practices and have the ability to effectively mentor students from historically marginalized groups (including though not limited to BIPOC individuals and women). A Ph.D. in Physics or a related field is required.

We invite applications from candidates who can contribute to the intellectual vibrancy and diversity of the academic community through their teaching, research, and service, and who are committed to ensuring the success of diverse student populations. The successful candidate will teach the equivalent of five and a half courses, including credited supervision of independent senior thesis projects. In addition to teaching physics courses and labs, the candidate will be expected to teach introductory astronomy courses regularly and participate in the College's interdisciplinary programs, including First-Year Seminar. We are particularly interested in candidates who can expand the range of the departmental curriculum and research to include computational modeling projects or astrophysics. Candidates should be able to advise research projects for a broad range of students, since every Wooster student completes a yearlong senior thesis project in our nationally recognized senior capstone program.

The department has four full-time faculty members, graduates approximately 12 majors annually, and is an inclusive community with close faculty-student interactions and mentoring. We have active astronomy and physics clubs, and our physics club has won national awards for its elementary school outreach program. The College of Wooster enrolls a diverse student body (24% domestic students of color and 17% international students). A complete application will include a letter of application; curriculum vitae; unofficial graduate transcripts; evidence of strong teaching (such as teaching philosophy, syllabi, and student evaluations, if applicable); research statement demonstrating the applicant’s plans to involve undergraduates in research; statement detailing how they have engaged and/or expect to engage with issues of diversity and inclusion in the classroom and the curriculum; and three reference letters. Review of applications will begin on Friday, October 8th, 2021 and continue until the position is filled. If you have questions regarding Interfolio, please contact Dawn Parker, Administrative Coordinator, at dparker@wooster.edu.
