TA Positions Available to Lead Math 231 (Calculus II) Discussion Sections
7/16/2012
The UIUC Math Department has openings for up to seven graduate engineering TA positions for Fall Semester 2012. These TA positions will involve leading discussion groups in sections of MATH 231 (Calc II) for engineering undergraduate students, as part of the COE/LAS Calculus Project.
The CoE/LAS Calculus Project aims to strengthen the integration of calculus with engineering material already in the initial mathematics courses required of all engineering undergraduate students. This is achieved through a treatment that emphasizes mathematical constructs and their intuitive connection to physical application in lectures as well as in discussions/recitations/labs. Desired outcomes are improved retention of mathematics material that better prepares engineering students for its application in upper-class topical engineering courses and improved retention of engineering freshmen past the initial calculus classes.
Physics graduate students interested in this opportunity should send electronic copies of an updated resume/CV and a one-page "Statement of Teaching Interests" to Prof. Matt West at mwest@illinois.edu at their earliest convenience. Staffing decisions are anticipated by the start of August.
