Soft Condensed Matter Research Presentation by Prof. Steve Granick, Friday, Sept. 28
9/26/2012
Prof. Steve Granick (Materials Science) will give a presentation on research opportunities in his soft condensed matter group in Phys. 596 (Physics Graduate Orientation) from roughly 11:30 a.m. - noon on Friday, Sept. 28, in Rm. 144 Loomis.
Prof. Granick's group is interested in "soft materials", fluid membranes, liposomes, polymers, colloids, and other structured liquids, and they presently focus on the behavior of soft materials at surfaces. This is important because the structure, properties, and reactivity of matter at a surface can be very different from that in bulk. Thin films and interfaces of these complex fluids are at the heart of an enormous range of scientific and technological problems: drug delivery, colloidal stability and flocculation, coatings, lubrication, adhesion, polymer reinforcement with nanoparticles, and biocompatibility. Students in the Granick research group thus gain broad training in a variety of subjects. The strengths of this group are in creatively devising new experimental approaches, using new experimental tools, to ask (and answer) new questions about these important problems.
Any graduate students interested in research opportunities in soft condensed matter -- even those not enrolled in Phys 596 -- are welcome to attend Phys. 596 class during Prof. Granick's presentation.
