Position Descriptions:
NUCLEAR PHYSICS IN LASER-PRODUCED PLASMAS The Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley has an opening for a postdoctoral scholar. Our group, in collaboration with scientists at DOE laboratories and international institutions, studies nuclear physics in laser-produced plasmas; experiments will be performed at laser facilities in the US and abroad. The successful candidate will design, plan, implement, analyze and report on experiments using high-power laser systems to study the interaction of nuclei with high temperature plasmas. This work supports ongoing research at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) to explore reactions on excited nuclear states and supports the development of an integrated nuclear-atomic-plasma computational capability at LLNL that would be competitive with models being developed abroad. The postdoctoral scholar will be responsible for two principle projects: (1) the development of laser-produced proton beams and their use to study proton-induced nuclear reactions and (2) ongoing studies at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics Omega laser performing x-ray and gamma spectroscopy in keV-temperature high-Z plasmas. Responsibilities will include experiment proposal and planning; organizing and communicating with a large team of theoretical and experimental collaborators; performing simulations of plasma evolution and atomic emission; performing experiments and analyzing results; writing publications and reporting results at professional conferences. Additional responsibilities may include supervising students and participating in accelerator experiments.
Required Qualifications: · PhD in physics, nuclear engineering or a related field. · Experience performing and analyzing high-power laser experiments · Expertise with dense plasma diagnostics, particularly x-ray spectroscopy and particle detection
Desired Qualifications: · Expertise with plasma simulation platforms, including radiation hydrodynamic and atomic physics codes · Experience with gamma detection and spectroscopy
You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply.
NUCLEAR-ATOMIC INTERACTIONS ON EXCITED STATES The Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley has an opening for a postdoctoral scholar. In collaboration with scientists at DOE laboratories, our group is exploring nuclear-plasma interactions on highly excited compound nuclear states. This postdoctoral scholarship focuses on a project involving the search for modifications in the isomer populations in 196Au due to nuclear-plasma interactions using a well controlled, beam-foil approach in a simulated plasma environment. Additional activities include support of the development of intense neutron capabilities using a high-flux DD neutron generator. The successful candidate will plan, implement, analyze, and report on these experiments to be conducted at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at UC Berkeley. Responsibilities will include experiment proposal and planning; organizing and communicating with a large team of theoretical and experimental collaborators; performing simulations of plasma evolution and atomic emission; performing experiments and analyzing results; writing publications and reporting results at professional conferences. Additional responsibilities may include supervising students and participating in laser-based experiments.
Required Qualifications: · PhD in physics, nuclear engineering or a related field. · Experience in experimental research in nuclear structure · Experience with gamma ray detection and spectroscopy
Desired Qualifications: · Data analysis expertise with local and/or ROOT software · Expertise in experimental studies of nuclear reaction mechanisms
