Prof. Robert Brunner Looking for Grad Researchers in Lab for Cosmological Data Mining

Prof. Robert Brunner is looking for one or more graduate student researchers to work on problems in the application of statistical and machine learning techniques to large astrophysical data or in observational cosmology. Professor Brunner’s group, the Laboratory for Cosmological Data Mining, develops and applies cutting-edge data mining algorithms to classify sources, to identify and characterize rare or transient phenomena, and to estimate the distances to extragalactic sources. In addition, his group uses these data mining results to make and interpret cosmological measurements of the distribution of galaxies and AGN in the Universe as measured by large surveys like the Dark Energy Survey and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope.

Algorithm development and acceleration is performed in collaboration with faculty in the Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Statistics departments and researchers at the Beckman Institute and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Computations are performed on Blue Waters and other national supercomputing resources and on cloud compute systems. For more information, contact Professor Brunner directly at bigdog@illinois.edu.
