Postdoc Position in Experimental AMO Physics at Sandia National Labs
12/16/2014
Job Title: Experimental AMO Physicist Postdoctoral Appointee, 1725
Job ID: 648055 Organization 01725
Location: Albuquerque, NM Full/Part Time: Full-Time Regular/Temporary: Temporary
Department Description
The Photonic Microsystems Technologies Department exploits science and technology at the nano and micro scales to enable advances in systems for national security. Our engagement is with a broad spectrum of technologies and a diverse field of customers with a successful record of maturing technology from concept to laboratory demo to prototype. The department consists of teams that lead the development and understanding of quantum effects associated with silicon electronic devices, atomic and molecular gases, and trapped electrons, atoms and ions. Most significantly, with a strong presence in the Microsystems Engineering Sciences and Applications (MESA) facility and the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) and working broadly with other Sandia and external organizations, we fabricate electronic structures and devices that use these effects to achieve new levels of performance at the integrated system level. Core technology areas in the department include nanofabrication of silicon devices; electromagnetic modeling; and ion trap and solid-state quantum information science and technology.

Job Description Postdoctoral Appointee
Job Summary Sandia's Photonic Microsystems Technologies Department has a postdoctoral-appointee opening for an exceptional AMO physicist to perform research and development activities related to micro fabricated/chip-based devices and their application to sensing and quantum information. The individual will work with a team of physicists and microfabrication engineers to research and develop new sensors and microdevices based on AMO physics. The responsibilities of this person will include but not be limited to a combination of device design, theory and simulation, fabrication, and laboratory experimentation and testing of devices that utilize the physics of atomic, molecular, and/or optical phenomena. The individual needs to possess a strong background in both experimental and theoretical atomic physics.
The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management's discretion to serve no more than fiveadditional one-year assignments. Extensions of up to six years require employee's manager approval. Six years or greater requires employee's manager and HR VP approval.
Required

--A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.2/4.0 and a minimum graduate GPA of 3.5/4.0.
--Experience with lasers and vacuum chamber construction.
--Experience with developing experimental control systems, including designing custom electronics and software.
--Experimental experience with ion trapping, neutral atom trapping, atomic vapor cell devices, cryogenic systems, and/or quantum information science, including work in at least two of these technology areas within the last two (2) years.
--Established authorship and innovation record, such as peer-reviewed scholarly articles, issued patents, or technical books. A minimum of three (3) first-author or co-authored peer-reviewed articles.
Desired
--Lawful Permanent Residence (LPR) holder.
--A track record of successful execution of research-and-development projects, including project planning, defining milestones, and delivering results on time.
--Experience in commercial product development.
--Undergraduate GPA of 3.5/4.0 or higher and a graduate GPA of 3.7/4.0 or higher.
