Professors Dahmen and Weaver seek a PhD student to extend the work of a very successful doctoral project ( by John Yoritomo, thesis available upon request, see esp Phys Rev E 101 012901 arXiv:1908.08935 ; Phys Rev E 101 012902 arXiv:1908.08935 ; under review arXiv:1912.04227) who is leaving soon for a permanent research position at the Naval Research Lab. Applications lie in rock mechanics, seismology, nondestructive evaluation, stochastic linear waves and collective non-equilibrium crackling noise behaviors of heterogeneous materials.

Measurements using MHz ultrasound are used to scrutinize tiny unexplained and universal changes, that follow modest mechanical strains, in a wide range of materials with complex internal interfaces.

Prior expertise in radio-frequency analog signal processing and digital data acquisition, and/or large data sets and statistical analyses, will be helpful but not necessary. More important is a willingness to learn.

Funds for a Research Assistantship are not in hand but are anticipated.
