The UIUC Provost's Office and Graduate College recently announced that they will provide UIUC departments, including Physics, supplemental funding to support a limited number of 2-month Supplementary Summer Block Grant (SSBG) fellowships for graduate students who have been particularly strongly affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Physics graduate students who feel that their health and/or degree progress has been particularly strongly impacted by the pandemic are invited to apply for one of the 2-month summer fellowships allocated to the Dept. of Physics. These summer fellowships will provide two months of summer support -- including a tuition waiver and the 87% subsidy for health insurance fees -- but will not require any summer teaching obligations.

Funding Criteria: The priorities for distributing the limited number of SSBG fellowships allocated to Physics are: (1) Physics grad students who expect to have difficulty teaching this summer because of medical or mental-health issues; (2) Physics grad students who expect to have difficulty teaching this summer because of visa issues, travel restrictions, family obligations, difficulties associated with remote teaching, etc; and (3) Physics grad students who would benefit from a summer teaching release because they have graduated or are graduating soon and need extra time to look for jobs and/or finish their theses.

To Apply: If you would like to apply for one of these need-based 2-month summer fellowships, please send me (slcooper@illinois.edu) an e-mail request with a brief justification for your request. If you'd prefer to make your request by phone or via a Zoom meeting, please let me know and I'll set up a time to talk/meet. All requests will be completely confidential.

Deadline: The deadline for receiving supplemental summer fellowship requests is May 15, 2020, which will give me sufficient time to make decisions and submit the fellowship paperwork to the campus by the campus deadline.
