Applications Open for Fall 2020 Physics Grad Travel Award or Supplementary Funding Requests
7/13/2020 8:27:13 AM
We're now accepting applications both for (i) Physics Grad Travel Awards for Fall 2020 conference participation (i.e., conference travel or remote participation during Sept. 1, 2019 - January 31, 2020) and/or (ii) supplementary funding requests for special medical, financial, and educational needs. The soft deadline for applications for Fall 2020 grad physics supplementary awards is September 1, 2020.
The original purpose of the Illinois Physics Graduate Student Travel Award Fund has been to provide opportunities for graduate students to attend special conferences or workshops or to participate in professional development activities that are not funded by their advisers' research grants. However, given the special circumstances presented by the pandemic and the likelihood that conference travel will be limited for the foreseeable future, we are also accepting requests for supplementary funds to defray the costs of medical expenses, special financial needs, and/or educational expenses. Award amounts will generally be limited to a maximum of $600, but higher amounts for special circumstances will be considered.
A complete application should include:
1. Completed Graduate Travel Award form
2. For conference travel, a brief letter of support from the applicant's thesis adviser, which can be submitted to Associate Head Lance Cooper via e-mail (slcooper@illinois.edu). For supplementary fund requests, no adviser letter is required, but a brief explanation via e-mail, phone, or Zoom meeting of the fund request would be appreciated.
