The Jackson lab in the Department of Chemistry has an opening for a theoretical/computational graduate student for a Ph.D. research project. The Jackson lab develops theoretical and computational methodologies that couple quantum and classical mechanical treatments to describe soft materials (polymers, liquid crystals, molecular films) at mesoscopic spatiotemporal scales. This project will involve the integration of advanced machine learning algorithms with first-principles electronic structure methods to developed spatially renormalized models of charge transport and reactivity in soft materials. Students with interests in condensed matter theory/computation, machine learning, or soft matter are encouraged to contact Prof. Jackson (jacksonn@illinois.edu) for more information.

Additional information may be found at https://thejacksonlab.web.illinois.edu/wp/. Representative publications pertaining to this project direction are provided below. Opportunities in other group research directions are also available.
