The Covey Lab has openings for one or two graduate students with interest in atomic physics, quantum optics, and/or quantum information science. The Covey Lab focuses on arrays of neutral alkaline earth atoms in optical tweezers [1,2] for myriad quantum science applications including quantum computation, quantum simulation, and quantum networking. Entangling operations are performed via the use of highly excited “Rydberg” states [3]. We are now starting a second research effort, for which we are recruiting Ph.D. students, to put a Rydberg atom array in an optical cavity to open new possibilities for quantum error correction and quantum networking [4,5,6]. This new effort will collaborate closely with our first experimental system, which is based on arrays of the same atomic species. Further detail is available here: coveylab.com.

Students with interest in atomic physics, quantum optics, and/or quantum information science are encouraged to contact Prof. Covey directly (jcovey@illinois.edu)
