Illinois Physics has launched a “Research Highlights Science Writing Contest” for Physics Grad Students: https://physics.illinois.edu/people/honors-and-awards/science-writing-contest

Please consider submitting contributions describing your own research. Research Highlights will be up to 800 words long and are addressed to a broad audience with background in Physics who are not specialists in your own area.

Two awards will be offered:

  1. The People’s Choice Award will be selected by your readers. Each semester the winner will receive a dinner for their entire research group at an approved local restaurant.
  2. The Editor’s Choice Award will be selected by an editorial review board once a year. Winners will receive $500.

This competition has the following goals:

  • Advertise the broad research activity in our department, the many outstanding results, and the enormous contributions graduate students are making to the public, alumni, donors and campus and off-campus leaders who are important for our funding.
  • Create an opportunity to further develop skills in technical writing and science communication.
  • Increase social and intellectual cohesion through internal communication of our research breadth (and through occasional group dinners for the winners …).
