Assistant Professor of Physics Aleksei Aksimentiev has been named a 2008 IBM Faculty Fellow. He will use his award to study the electrostatic control of DNA motion in a synthetic nanopore. Aksimentiev describes his research as "experiments in silico"; he uses massively parallel computing to model the behavior of molecular motors, mechanical proteins, membrane transport, and ion channels in biological systems.
